Meet Blu DeTiger, the badass bassist on TikTok

Meet Blu DeTiger, the badass bassist on TikTok

We caught up with the badass bassist on life in quarantine, new music, and of course, TikTok

HUSTLE (H): You grew up in NY and started playing the bass at the age of seven. You must have some good stories - what's your fav NY music memory?

Blu DeTiger (BD): My first ever show was at CBGB when I was 7, back when it was still around. I played there several times before it closed, and I feel really lucky to have done that. I took a piece of one of the walls to keep as a souvenir. (Shhhh)

H: What attracted you to the bass? Do you play any other instruments?

BD: I was 7 at the time, and my older brother Rex played drums. I wanted to play an instrument too, and I remember subconsciously thinking that guitar was too “mainstream.” I wanted to be unique and try something a bit more rare! I play guitar now as well, but bass is my instrument.

H: How are you staying creative in quarantine? Where do you go to find inspiration?

BD: I’ve been writing a lot of music, making videos (music videos and bass covers). I’ve been trying to journal regularly during this time as well—I feel like that usually gets my juices going a bit more.

H: You and your brother often perform together and Rex even helped with your new music video for “Figure It Out.” What’s working with your brother like? How does your creative process differ when you’re working on a collaborative project versus solo?

BD: I love working with my brother. We have a sort of sibling telepathy that can’t really be explained. We’ll always have really special experiences together touring and playing on stage together as a rhythm section, and now we have such a good flow as song-writing partners (for songs we’ve been writing for my project during this time). He’s so talented and we just get each other because we’re so close. I’m very grateful to have him as a partner right now.

H:  What are some of your music influences?

BD: Late 70s/early 80s disco funk mixed with New York edge and new wave flare. Prince, Bowie, Chic, Tom Tom Club, ESG, Blondie and more!!

H: Paper Magazine named you “Tik Tok’s Most Badass Bassist” - what’s your fav Tik Tok trend at the moment?

BD: The matcha pour one out trend of course!

I don’t really have a favorite trend at this moment because I’ve always tried to go my own way on the app. The “bored in the house, in the house bored” trend was fun. I also like the cooking hacks trend and have enjoyed seeing all the people that have used my song “Figure It Out” for that!

H: When you’re not performing, what do you like to do during your down time? Do you have any side hustles we might not know about?

BD: During quarantine I’ve been relaxing by doing puzzles (sounds so nerdy but it’s so relaxing and keeps my brain busy in a different way). Pre-quarantine I like dancing with my friends, playing ping pong, catching up on trending shows that I’ve missed. My side hustles are usually always music related - DJ sets, remixes, music for commercials...

H: Who is your dream collab artist?

BD: I would love to work with Mark Ronson one day. And of course Prince if he were alive :(

H: Anything we can look forward to?

BD: I have a bunch of new singles coming out soon, and an EP on the way! I’m constantly doing livestream live sets and dj sets during this time too!

H: Lastly, how do you like your matcha!

BD: My favorite is an iced matcha latte with almond milk and a dash of cinnamon. It’s super easy to make at home and is the perfect amount of sweetness :)
